The chapter argues that whistleblowers are recurring protagonists in popular culture and cinema in particular. In films, whistleblowers are portrayed as secular heroes pitted against organizational ‘villains’ able to harness significant resources to silence and attack the whistleblower through accusations of treason, theft, and contract breach. The chapter shows how the whistleblower hero’s journey consists of five phases or thresholds that must be passed in order to demonstrate the protagonist’s prosocial and heroic potential. The framework is applied to eight whistleblower films from the period 1973 to 2016. The study of hero-making narratives in films informs our understanding of real-life whistleblowing because it lets us understand how the act of whistleblowing is ideally motivated and performed in democratic societies.

摘要
