In recent decades, the social sciences and humanities have experienced a series of “turns” that have led to a recalibration of research focus and the adoption of new conceptual frameworks. Often, these turns have been introduced to address the blind spots of previous paradigms and to incorporate perspectives that were previously absent. With the cultural turn, for example, scholars disillusioned by the dominance of positivism in their fields began to explain human behavior in terms of cultural meaning systems (Roseneil & Frosh, 2012, p. 3). In a sense, the entire field of contemporary cultural psychology is an outcome of the cultural turn. The narrative turn and, more broadly, the linguistic turn, led to many psychological concepts being understood as constituted by language (Painter & Theron, 2001). I discussed the most prominent outcomes of the narrative turn—various theories of narrative identity—in greater detail in Sect. 7.3 .
