This chapter shows in full for the first time a large number of letters written by Eileen. She worked for the Ministry of Food from early 1941 until late in 1944, and these letters are all held in the BBC Written Archive. The letters show Eileen in a professional working capacity, negotiating with the BBC for Ministry information to be included in broadcasts such as Kitchen Front. We see her offering suggestions for themes and finding contributors from her vast network of literary contacts. Whilst working at the Ministry, she used the name Emily Blair, and we offer some suggestions about the origins of this. Whilst these are all letters of business, they also show Eileen to be drawing on her well-established whimsical humour. She develops friendships with those she works with both at the Ministry and the BBC, and the letters help us piece together some details of her own illness. We also use testimonies by those who are closest to Eileen to show how she contributed to the creation of Animal Farm at this time.
