This chapter explores the early years of the Second World War. It seems Eileen and Orwell move from Wallington to London, so they are better placed to help with the war effort. There are letters of business from Eileen as she sorts out the tenancy of the Wallington cottage, and also letters to her friends which are full of lively details of the couple’s move to London. The letters stop abruptly in June 1940 when her beloved brother is killed during the evacuation from Dunkirk. The depths of her grief are described by others.
