Evolution of Bacterial tRNA Nucleotidyltransferases

The CCA end of tRNA molecules is required for their function in protein synthesis. As some tRNA genes do not encode the CCA end, that sequence must be added post-transcriptionally by tRNA nucleotidyltransferases. The existence of CCA-, CC- and A-adding tRNA nucleotidyltransferases raises interesting questions regarding the evolution of these enzymes. Which activity appeared first, for example, during bacterial evolution? This chapter discusses the activities and distribution of the tRNA nucleotidyltransferases, describes and evaluates existing models for the evolution of these enzymes and proposes a potentially useful and innovative approach to examine that evolution.
