Humans exist in space. Through the rise of the metaverse, the physical and the digital spaces overlap and intertwine, and the currently held understanding of spatial experience will be inevitably challenged. In this chapter, we provide an overview of our recent work in this intersection of fields, discussing how spatial experience is a critical aspect of how humans experience everyday life. We contribute to the role of space in the metaverse. Based on our experiences, we discuss how modern technologies such as generative AI and experience sampling methods will be imperative in enriching the metaverse experience. Finally, we propose how the metaverse can be useful both functionally and speculatively in improving the experience of space in the physical world.
