In this chapter, I use a transdiagnostic approach to describe the peer relationships of children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders (ND). I describe research on four key aspects of peer relations—peer status, friendship, bullying, and romantic relationships. I provide a model that is based on research on the peer relationships of neurotypical and ND children and adolescents that illustrates the risk and protective factors for positive peer relationships, mental health, and well-being. In addition to the challenges of ND youth described in Chap. 1 (i.e., self-regulation, academic achievement, adaptive skills, and social skills), these risk and protective factors involve having strengths valued by the peer group, parent behaviors, teacher behaviors, and the school environment. I use four case studies to illustrate the components of the model and to elucidate factors associated with resilience of ND youth.

摘要
