Based on the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), this chapter explore the role of the UN in promoting corporate accountability in Africa. The United Nations (UN’s) efforts to promote corporate accountability could ultimately protect human rights, promote sustainable development, and enhance the role of businesses in the global economy. This obligation stems from the fact that multinational corporations (MNCs) should respect human rights, by conducting due diligence and offering effective remedies for human rights violations. However, the implementation of these principles faces significant challenges: the lack of binding legal mechanisms to enforce these principles. This has resulted in a lack of accountability among companies. Additionally, there is a need for greater awareness among companies and other stakeholders about the importance of corporate accountability. Despite these challenges, the UN’s efforts to promote business and human rights through these principles have created a framework for corporate accountability. Through greater awareness, education, and enforcement mechanisms, the UN can continue to promote implementing these principles while creating a discursive space that could stimulate mechanisms for ensuring that businesses are held accountable for their impact on human rights and the environment.
