The AfDB has emerged as a key player in financing and shaping development initiatives in Africa. The purpose of this chapter is to examine the approaches used by the African Development Bank (AfDB) to implement environmental rights in development projects. It explores the Bank’s policies, frameworks, and practices aimed at integrating environmental rights into its operations. It reviews the Integrated Safeguard Systems (ISS and analyzes case studies of environmental rights violation. It further analyses the challenges of implementing environmental rights and concludes by proposing actionable recommendations to enhance the Bank’s role in promoting environmental rights and ensuring sustainable development in Africa.
