The history of neural therapy in Germany goes back to the two general practitioners Ferdinand and Walter Huneke, who accidentally discovered in 1925 the therapeutic usefulness of procaine outside of local anesthesia for surgical purposes. From the initially vague ideas of the procaine effect, they discovered the effect via the autonomic nervous system and developed the therapy concept of neural therapy, which today is described as an “Injection treatment method with local anesthetics using the functions and properties of the autonomic nervous system.” This procedure is now integrated into everyday conventional medical treatment procedures and belongs to the field of regulatory medicine. The scientific principles are based on current knowledge of the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of the autonomic nervous system.
