This chapter provides an argument that today’s students need to possess strong skills in the language arts, mathematics, science, humanities and technologies. We propound the critical importance of developing students to be adept at skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, persistence and resilience, collaboration, and curiosity. As we progress onward in the second quarter of the twenty-first century, we envision the shift toward meta-skills and STEA+M thinking systems—systems of interrelated skills comprising foundational literacies, competencies, and character qualities—that are capable of being developed via STEA+M education. Foundational literacies are necessary skills that will help students cope with everyday life. As life becomes more complex, however, students need to be equipped with meta-skills such as integrative thinking skills; meta-communicative and influence skills; social consciousness and agency; and ethical technological literacies. These meta-skills synergise into thinking systems that are embodied in one’s thinking and action. Examples of STEA+M thinking systems are social entrepreneurial mindset and socio-environmental sustainability Agency. These network of skills and competencies can be fostered through hands-on, project-oriented, problem-solving, and interdisciplinary approachess. We argue that design thinking, hands-on learning, and project-based learning as STEA+M education in makerspaces facilitate the development of these neo-twenty-first century competencies.
