The use of the latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap as a free flap was first described by Watson et al. in 1979. Arterial supply of the flap is based on the thoracodorsal artery. The long pedicle length, large amount of surface area, option to perform as a perforator-based flap to tailor the tissue type and flap thickness, and minimal functional morbidity make this donor site a reliable and versatile flap for a variety of head and neck soft tissue reconstruction.
