Transformation of Traditional Clothing to Modern Fashion in Tamil Culture and Its Sustainability

Tamil culture is said to be one of the oldest on the earth. Clothing is an important feature in the rich and diverse Tamil culture. The saree or sari and dhoti are the chief clothing for women and men, respectively. Traditionally, cotton and silk were the clothing of the poor and the rich, respectively. Tamil culture developed intricate textiles by hand spinning, hand weaving, and natural dyeing with dyes derived from mostly plant sources. But the clothing of the Tamil people has transformed astonishingly to keep in line with the fashion trends of the present day. This chapter discusses this transformation and the related aspects.
