This chapter explores the images and pictures posted on Facebook by members of the youth gangs "Os Manos" and "Primeiro Comando do Ferrari – PCF" of the city of São José do Norte, Brazil. The gangs not only maintain profiles on Facebook, but also the young men associated with them openly exhibit their affiliation, which contributes to the formation of their identities as gang members. The posts reveal that being part of a gang is not something that is restricted to occasional material rewards. Through participation in gangs, young males seek to resolve situational and existential anxieties. Participants negotiate identity, seek purpose, and act driven by negotiations of meaning that give sense to their lives. The visual language employed by these groups not only communicates their defiance but also solidifies their collective identity within a shared cultural framework. Symbols of rebellion, such as clown masks and phallic imagery, intertwine with popular cultural references, creating a hybrid aesthetic that emerges from both cinematic narratives and local realities. Gangs, therefore, emerge as spaces of alternative recognition and empowerment, redefining the societal metrics of respect and success through their own codes.
