Exploring the Eco-Friendly and Health Benefits of Exergaming to Improve Physical Activity Level in Urbanised East Asian Cities
摘要
Rapid urbanisation of populated East Asian cities led to sedentarism that poses significant health issues among urban dwellers. Major city residents in Asia face challenges accessing exercise facilities, transportation issues and commitment to work and family that precludes exercise. The emergence of exergames, a combination of exercise and gaming, can be used to promote physical activity in urban settings. This case study explored the benefits and challenges exergaming can offer within the Malaysian cultural context, which parallels urbanised East Asian cities such as Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and China. Two sedentary urban Asians trained using exergaming for 12-weeks at home, utilising virtual reality-based sports exergaming. Physiological measures such as heart rate, physical activity level, enjoyment score and cardiorespiratory fitness levels were taken pre and post training. At the end of the training, open ended interviews were conducted individually to collate their experiences on the training program. Home-based exergaming training improved physical activity level, cardiorespiratory fitness and resting heart rate when performed at dose-potent intensities. Exergaming can also overcome common barriers to exercise among East Asians, and is space-efficient. However, wide-scale implementation of exergames face challenges for being too expensive to initiate, while also wrought by hardware and software issues.
