This chapter presents a comparative analysis of pandemic preparedness and response strategies in Thailand, Cambodia, and Myanmar. It is a combination of ethnographic fieldwork, in-depth interviews with multiple stakeholders including border crossers, frontline officers, representatives from health-related authorities between June 2022 and May 2023, and desk-review methodology to analyse official documents, media reports, and scholarly journals. The study examines the impacts of political, social, and economic factors on the effectiveness of the cross-border management strategies in the region. Border closures and travel restrictions were common but varied in implementation and effectiveness across the three countries. To illustrate, Thailand presented effective pandemic preparedness and response through its robust health surveillance system. ​Cambodia managed to contain the disease, yet cybercrime issues emerged out of the pandemic. While Myanmar’s response was hindered by political instability leading to the collapse of health system. It underscores the importance of regional interconnectedness and cooperation in pandemic preparedness and responses, the need for dedicated border taskforces to enhance health security. Lastly, this chapter suggests that political stability and robust public health infrastructure are crucial for effective management and regional health security.
