I describe growing up surrounded by fire-prone chaparral before I gained an ecological perspective of fire from undergraduate and graduate educational experiences. I came to understand that destructive home fires are nothing like forest fires, which serve as important essential, repeated disturbance events. The most important concepts I gained from biology were how natural selection operates to mold plant and animal characteristics, and how much field ecology has to offer as a vocation.
