I describe how public land management agencies are responsible for maintaining the ecological integrity of the lands they manage while allowing multiple uses of the same land. That means managing forests to maintain, rather than managing them to stop or mitigate the effect of severe fire disturbance events. Movement toward more ecologically oriented land management will require a paradigm shift where natural disturbance events are allowed to do the work they have done for millennia. That, in turn, will require landscape-level management where hundreds of hectares of every unaltered successional stage following severe fire is present at any one point in time and all successional stages are maintained dynamically across large areas.
