This chapter shows the components of blood, which consists of a liquid matrix, blood plasma, and various cell types. The functions of blood and methods of studying its organisation are introduced. The composition of blood plasma, the characteristics of erythrocytes, the various types of leukocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, monocytes and lymphocytes) and the structure of platelets are explained.
