In this chapter, you will learn how the connective tissue of the dental pulp is organised into various zones, which cells form it, and how the nerves and blood vessels that run through it are organised. You will see that odontoblasts, which form dentine, are found at the boundary of dentine and dental pulp, and when active are tall cells with many biosynthetic organelles. You will learn that there are multipotent stem cells that can produce many cell types and are being used for tissue regeneration studies. You will see that there are two types of sensory nerve fibres in the dental pulp: one is responsible for dentine sensitivity and the other for pulp sensitivity. Finally, you will study the functions performed by the pulp and learn that it can undergo some alterations, including the formation of pulp stones.
