This chapter describes the three types of muscle tissue: smooth muscle, skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle. They are all made up of cells that can contract due to the special organisation of their cytoskeleton and the sliding of actin microfilaments between myosin filaments. It is explained that skeletal and cardiac muscle show transverse striations when viewed under the microscope, while smooth muscle does not. It is also shown how the cytoskeleton and other organelles are organised in the cells of each of these muscle types and how contraction occurs.
