In his original theory, Kitwood described two forms of interactions that staff can have with people living with dementia: The first was Malignant Social Psychology (MSP). Kitwood identified these interactions (if allowed to happen, or continue) that will contribute to negative experiences of people living with dementia within organisations which also threaten dignity. Kitwood used MSP as part of a more complex tool known as Dementia Care Mapping, which organaisations can use to examine and challenge practice. Organisations can also use these tools to examine the behaviours and practice of their staff to identify ways in which bad practice can be challenged, and systems put in place to monitor and maintain best practice. This chapter examines these types of interactions and the significance that they have within practice.
