Reablement in dementia care focuses on a shift from the traditional models used to support people living with dementia to those that advocate the need to focus on a person-led approach that promotes autonomy, capability, and meaningful engagement. This chapter examines some of the key issues relating to reablement and the key theories relating to this and practical applications, as well as the emerging evidence-based approaches relating to reablement for people living with dementia, with the key focus on how caregivers are central to this process with the support of a range of resources and professionals. It also examines the challenges of implementing reablement within care settings, with the main focus being within the community to support people living with dementia to maintain as much of their independence as possible and to delay admission to residential care settings. This chapter advocates for a more empowering and person-centred approach that supports people living with dementia and the important role their caregivers play in this.
