The theoretical background of this thesis is presented in detail in this chapter. First, diverse concepts of group theory and symmetries and their relation to condensed matter physics are introduced; then, the Dirac equation is presented. Topological systems and their classification are defined, as well as moiré materials beyond twisted bilayer graphene. This chapter includes several examples and figures that provide a pedagogical approach.
