Topological and moiré materials are two of the most exciting emerging disciplines in modern condensed matter physics. In this chapter, the main landmarks of topological materials research are briefly discussed, and the most well-known types of topological phases are introduced. Moiré materials, with a focus on twisted bilayer graphene, are also presented. This chapter connects both fields by discussing the concept of Dirac matter and the leading role of symmetries. Finally, the chapter organisation of this thesis is outlined.

摘要
