This chapter offers an excursus, discussing a particular case of eco-anxiety: people’s misgivings about starting a family in the face of bleak future prospects. A “Wittgensteinian” reading of this attitude is offered, which shows that, taken as an expression of emotion, the decision to remain childless need not be understood necessarily as either an argument-based conclusion or an irrational instinctive behaviour but rather as a form of understanding one’s life, expressed in one’s overall attitude. Environmental childlessness is compared to some ideas about polyamory, suggesting that both may be understood as lifestyle choices accommodating the precariousness of life today.
