Capitalising the ‘Silver Economy’
摘要
This chapter examines the development of China’s eldercare market, propelled by government initiatives aimed at fostering the silver economy in response to rapid population ageing. This chapter traces the transition from family-based care to market-driven eldercare, focusing on the roles played by the government, state-owned enterprises, insurance companies, investment funds, and private businesses. Engaging with literature on the socialisation of markets, it investigates the commodification of care services, strategies for consumer engagement, and the standardisation of eldercare products. Additionally, it explores the regional disparities in the growth of eldercare services and the varying degrees of market expansion or contraction within the Yangtze River Delta. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the socio-economic factors shaping the marketisation of eldercare in China, as well as the complex interplay between state-led initiatives, private sector involvement, and social responsibility in the formation of this emerging industry.
