More than a decade ago, Palgrave approached us about the possibility of editing a collection of essays on Arctic politics and policy. The idea was intriguing. Ken has worked in the field for decades, initially as a northern historian and in recent years as a specialist in Indigenous rights and northern public policy. Although she had traveled extensively in the Canadian and European Norths, Carin was a relative newcomer to the field, having worked for years on aspects of public policy in Japan and East Asia. She was drawn north by an interest in the evolving role of East Asia in the Arctic and her work on national innovation systems, which overlapped with Ken’s work on northern economic development. The idea, while appealing, was formidable: recruiting experienced authors from across the Circumpolar world, identifying a short list of topics to cover, and working with more than two dozen accomplished writers to prepare a finished product. We were delighted with the Palgrave Handbook on Arctic Politics and Policies and waited nervously to get the judgments of our peers. We were delighted when, in 2024, the press returned to us, reporting on the strong interest in the first edition and asking us to prepare a second edition. This is the result of our collective efforts and, for the second time, a truly international collaboration.
