Metalinguistic Awareness: Definitions, Models, and Factors of Development
摘要
In this section, we first analyze the spectrum of terms related that revolve around the concept of metalinguistics, the way philosophers of language, theoretical and applied linguists, and developmental psycholinguists have defined it, each terminology reflecting the specific focus that characterizes the respective field. We then illustrate the major models of MLA development elaborated from the 70s to approximately the 90s of the past century. Other factors that have traditionally been considered influential on the development of MLA and intertwined with it are also treated, namely, literacy and bilingualism, to which two more factors have been added, addressed by more recent literature: the cognitive processes of the executive function (EF) area, and mentalizing abilities as conceptualized by Theory of Mind (ToM).
