SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems are cornerstones of the modern industrial control, enabling the real-time observation and adjustment in the power generation, manufacturing, and water treatment infrastructures, among others. This chapter describes the development of SCADA systems and their connection to the modern interconnected and IoT-based environment as well. SCADA contains an in-depth review of components such as HMIs (Human-Machine Interfaces), RTUs (Remote Terminal Units), and PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), and how they enable data acquisition, system control, and all of the human intervention required. Furthermore, the chapter discusses SCADA communication protocols and security issues as well as the different software environments related to these systems. Through investigations of SCADA’s system architecture and components, any reader will develop the ability to evaluate, use, or operate these control systems and determine the levels of productivity and safety of the industrial processes they control and maintain.
