The title of this chapter is, pointedly, taken from Elias CanettiCanetti, Elias, whose remarks on Robert Walser, even if not extensive, are often cited. In The BookAgainst Death, CanettiCanetti, Elias includes a single entry on Walser, in the form of a few lines quoted from a short story by him, ‘Frau Scheer’, written during the Berlin years. CanettiCanetti, Elias’s book is itself an assemblage of thoughts and quotations amassed over several decades, all of which express in some way or another CanettiCanetti, Elias’s desire—impossible as it may seem—not only to resist deathdeath but to somehow eradicate it altogether. Often this seems a literal ambition, while at other times it is presented as a wish to overturn completely the meaning that death holds, particularly for contemporary Western society after the horrors of the mid-twentieth century in Europe. To utterly transform death, in other words, so as to abolish it by other means.
