Youthquakes and Aftershocks: Youth Political Participation in the UK, Europe and the United States in the 2020s
摘要
This chapter traces the evolution from the 2017 UK “youthquake” to the “youthquake aftershocks” of the 2020s, examining shifting patterns of youth political participation across advanced democracies. The initial surge of progressive youth engagement around socially liberal, anti-establishment leaders has given way to growing disillusionment among Generation Z, shaped by intersecting crises—climate change, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the cost-of-living shock. Although young cosmopolitans, particularly women and university graduates, continue to back progressive movements, a substantial minority of young men have turned toward populist and authoritarian-nationalist alternatives. The chapter argues that policy failures and ineffective political communication pose profound challenges to liberal democracy and underscore the role of civic education in rebuilding trust and participation among younger generations.
