Kenya is known as one of the most successful digital consumer finance markets in the Global South. Yet there has been a parallel, and often less visible, growth of informal and mutual finance practices, which have been especially successful at including women. This paper uses ethnographic fieldwork and focus group data, along with an analysis of informal finance and mutualism in the FinAccess, to discuss the strengths of informal financial practices, their pain points, and the ways that they incorporate digital financial practices in novel ways.

摘要

Kenya is known as one of the most successful digital consumer finance markets in the Global South. Yet there has been a parallel, and often less visible, growth of informal and mutual finance practices, which have been especially successful at including women. This paper uses ethnographic fieldwork and focus group data, along with an analysis of informal finance and mutualism in the FinAccess, to discuss the strengths of informal financial practices, their pain points, and the ways that they incorporate digital financial practices in novel ways.
