Despite the long history in social sciences of studying the link between social embeddedness and political and social behavior, literature concerned with the influence of perceived loneliness on political attitudes and behavior is much smaller and less extensive. Likewise, the underlying mechanisms linking loneliness to political behavior are often undertheorized. This engages this gap in the literature and reviews the existing literature linking loneliness to political attitudes and behaviors. To that end, I discuss the mechanisms linking objective social relationships to political behavior in this chapter. Subsequently, I review the mechanism linking loneliness and political behaviors and contrast both pathways with one another. By doing so, the chapter highlights the importance of differentiating both while simultaneously illustrating the interrelatedness of both concepts on a conceptual level. As such, exploring the interplay between the emotional and structural components of social relationships in explaining political actions offers a fruitful interdisciplinary avenue that upcoming studies should explore in more detail.
