Knowing the risk factors for shoulder periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is of great interest, as this will allow us to avoid or minimize the occurrence of PJI after performing a total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) or a reverse TSA (RTSA). There are several modifiable factors that increase the risk of PJI after shoulder replacement. These include the use of perioperative steroid injections, up to 1 month prior to the procedure, cannabis use, and poor glycemic control in diabetic patients. Other factors are not modifiable, such as prior rotator cuff repair, aseptic reoperation for reasons other than PJI, or a history of non-shoulder PJI.
