The Future of RPA in the Context of Automation Platforms
摘要
Robotic Process Automation has emerged as a key driver of digital transformation by enabling organizations to automate repetitive, rule-based tasks with minimal disruption to existing IT systems. Its core strength lies in GUI-based automation, allowing rapid deployment, particularly in legacy environments. Simultaneously, software vendors are evolving RPA into end-to-end automation platforms by integrating APIs, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, thereby supporting advanced paradigms such as intelligent and hyper-automation. The evolving definitions and perceptions of RPA—and its shifting role within the broader automation technology landscape—are outlined in the state of knowledge section. This paper investigates how RPA aligns with the broader domain of process automation and the role it is expected to play in the future. It further explores RPA’s unique capabilities in contrast to other automation technologies, its current areas of application, and prospective functionalities that may enhance its accessibility and usability. Based on a detailed qualitative study involving 13 expert interviews with developers, consultants, researchers, and vendors, the research applies detailed In Vivo and Concept coding with 805 emerging codes leading to three thematic pillars: core RPA capabilities, RPA as a component of integrated automation platforms, and general automation strategies. The findings offer a forward-looking view on the strategic development and practical impact of RPA in enterprise contexts.
