Questions Raised by the Presence of Religions in State Schools in Hungary
摘要
Religion in public schools in Hungary appears in at least three ways. First, at the curricular level, it is present in some subjects like History or Literature, mainly with a historical or cultural perspective. Second, religious topics are covered briefly in Ethics classes, or students who choose RE instead of Ethics participate in confessional RE for eight years, which provides them with a distinctive worldview in an otherwise impartial life of the state school. Third, religion may also appear as an extracurricular element if a school or a teacher includes it among the optional programmes of a school or a class. This paper aims to describe this situation and raise the questions that follow from it. Asking these questions increases awareness and encourages researchers to carry out essential surveys in this under-investigated field of education.
