In this contribution, we will have a closer look at the European recommendations regarding citizenship and religious education and examine to which extent they have been implemented in schools in Belgium. In order to do so, we start with a summary of these recommendations, followed by a sketch of the religious and educational context in Belgium. Subsequently, we will have a look at some recent changes in the organization of Religious Education and Citizenship Education in Belgian schools and examine to which extent the European policy recommendations have been taken into consideration. To conclude, we will evaluate the recent policy changes and do some recommendations for further improvement.
