This algebraic term was coined as German Bewertung ‘valuation’ by József K rschák. He used the term at a talk in 1912 (Kürschák 1913a, p. 285), and presented his theory in more depth in Kürschák (1913b). The notion was already implicit in Hensel’s work and is a generalization of that of ‘absolute value’, and this is the reason why the term was chosen.
