Expanded polystyrene (EPS) block (geofoam block) has been used to construct highway and bridge approach embankments to remediate bearing capacity and settlement problems since 1972. In addition, geofoam block technology is preferred to construct embankments atop shallow buried utility corridors to prevent potential structural damage to the pipeline. The first roadway geofoam block embankment application in Romania was completed in September 2023 near Jilava, south Bucharest. Geofoam geotechnology was selected to construct a portion of an overpass bridge approach embankment where a shallow buried pipeline transversing the embankment. Geofoam blocks were prevented the construction of a culvert like capping protection structure if traditional compacted fill was used to construct the portion of the approach embankment atop the pipeline. Selecting geofoam blocks not only provided cost saving but also allowed the completion of the construction without any service interruption of the pipeline. The details of the project, design objectives and construction sequence are discussed.
