In-formation: Shaping Tools, Composition Rules, Visual Thinking and the Creative Processes

This article explores the experimental development of the course “Conception Form for Architecture - CFA” at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. As a foundational theoretical-practical course unit, CFA integrates classical (Vitruvius, Alberti, Durand) and modern (Van Doesburg, Kandinsky, Corbusier) architectural treatises, as well as aesthetics and visual perception theories by the Bauhaus. Since CFA was created before the digital era, integrating digital methods requires rethinking both physical and digital processes to identify their limitations and advantages. The authors re-think the CFA processes and methodology using as a case study the design for a park shelter, based on a classical design exercise from American and European universities known as “The Nine Square-Matrix” [1]. Originally developed with physical processes, during the pandemic it was necessary to develop a fully digital alternative process. The current exercise intentionally blends physical and digital processes using visual grammars. In this article, we carefully explore the creation of a generative system, starting from a physical composition in 2D and then using 3D modelling to shape an interior in-between space in a physical-digital feedback cycle of in-formation (In-formation embodies the inward act of shaping --derived from Latin in-formāre (`in' and `to shape'), originally meaning `give form or instruct.' Tracing its evolution from Old French enformacion to Middle English information, its sense shifted from teaching to conveying knowledge. The hyphen marks a fleeting threshold where raw ideas, data or matter coalesce into form-as-knowledge. Instead of relying on a static, predefined vocabulary, In-formation focuses on emergence as an in-between moment, celebrating how novel patterns spontaneously arise during the process of formation.). The analysis highlights the benefits and limitations of this integrated process, and suggests that combining physical and digital methods can promote visual and systemic thinking. Situated within computational design, this methodology intends to expand creativity and foster innovation.
