This research focuses on formalizing the logic of Louis Kahn’s unbuilt Two Houses. With these designs, Kahn aimed to be systematic in approaching the technological challenges of the time with ordered, growth-oriented solutions that could adapt to various conditions and requirements. Following this ambition, the work here studies how formal analysis complemented by rule-based design synthesis can increase creative exploration systematically with visual-computational means. Specifically, the study develops an implemented shape grammar based on the DeVore and Adler Houses to generate residential floor plan variations. The algorithmic interpretation of these precedents offers an enlivened perspective on Kahn’s residential work alongside a broader aim to contribute to discussions on how the future of architectural practice and pedagogy can be proactively crafted to better benefit from analysis-synthesis workflows with shape grammars.
