This chapter will be devoted to the emergence of Early Neolithic imagery. I will begin with a theoretical discussion on the importance of imagery, touching upon the significance of materials, particularly clay, in this context. Next, I will present the site of Çatalhöyük through different stages of its occupation. Given the extensive scholarly discourse on this site, I will provide a brief overview. Before discussing the Early Neolithic (around 7100–6500 BC) repertoire of imagery at Çatalhöyük itself, I will also show its longevity by referring to the Near East. Finally, I will briefly review the state of the art and some previous interpretations.
