It was 1915, early in the War to End all Wars. Fritz Haber and his German scientist corps opened the valves on the chlorine canisters and watched the poisonous green fog slowly blanket the French and Algerian soldiers in their trenches. This was the horrific weapon that Haber had envisioned to save the Fatherland. Was it any worse to die of poisonous vapers than from bullets? But Fritz Haber was also the chemist who discovered how to capture nitrogen from the air and turn it into fertilizer, “bread from the air” as some called it, saving millions of people. This chemist of the war who unleashed poison gases was also the scientist of peace who fed millions. Haber was also a Jew, and despite his extreme patriotism, the Nazis rejected him and he died in exile. And as a final, tragic irony, the pesticide he developed to protect German agriculture was used in the ovens to exterminate millions of Jews in the holocaust. Do we tally the lives taken, and the lives saved? Is it the math that we count to determine if he is a monster or a savior? In the months following the end of the World War I, while the sick and wounded were still dying in hospitals and the poisons were still contaminating the earth in Flanders, the Swedish Nobel Committee did their sums and awarded Fritz Haber the 1918 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
