The purpose of this chapter is to compare the performance of various lossless and lossy image compression techniques and formats. The image compression techniques that are compared are Run-Length Encoding (RLE), Huffman Coding, Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW), Area Coding, Vector Quantization (VQ), Fractal Compression, Block Truncation Coding (BTC), and Transformation Coding. The image formats that are compared are GIF, BMP, TIFF, PNG, JPEG, and JPEG 2000.
