I shall turn now to Karl Menger’s investigations into dimension theory and closely related curve theory. There are many similarities between the early progress of Menger and the nearly simultaneous early progress ofUrysohn on this topic, even though they worked independently of one another. This coincidence is unsurprising. They both started work from essentially the same problem: the problem of defining the concept of curve and by implication the problem of defining the concept of dimension.
