Brouwer submitted his ‘Beweis der Invarianz der Dimensionenzahl’ (‘Proof of the Invariance of the Dimension Number’) [Brouwer, 1911a] to Mathematische Annalen in June 1910 and delivered his lecture ‘De invariantie van her aantal dimensies eener ruimte’ (‘The Invariance of theNumber of Dimensions of a Space’) to theWiskundig Genootschap, the Dutch Mathematics Society, in October of the same year. Even before the paper was issued on 14 February 1911 two particular mathematicians residing outside of Holland were specially informed of its contents:
