In a society where access to information and technology is ubiquitous and in the hands of all young people, there is a growing concern about the risks inherent in such rapid technological advances and what the future may hold. Artificial intelligence and its associated tools have been employed for a variety of purposes in a multitude of domains. However, when it comes to education, there are several concerns that impede its effective integration into the classroom. This research, based on a case study, aims to test a didactic sequence where artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are the main players in a practical approach to natural sciences curriculum content, namely the study of microorganisms. This research aims to address the following questions: i) Does Artificial Intelligence facilitate the optimal utilization of students’ time and the management of their autonomy? ii) Does the integration of Artificial Intelligence in the classroom facilitate the acquisition of competencies as outlined in Portuguese “Profile of Students Leaving Compulsory Education”? The main results highlight that AI can be a valuable tool for teachers, helping in the classroom management and scaffolding students’ autonomy. Also, provides evidence about development of scientific, technical and technological knowledge, interpersonal relationships and student’s competences such us critical and creative thinking, problem-solving.
