Taking a Flight with Drones in STEM Education: Benefits, Affordances, Facilitating Factors and Challenges

The aim of this qualitative study was to investigate the beliefs and experiences of in-service teachers with respect to the factors that motivate them to use drones when teaching STEM to their students. Data were gathered from 39 teachers through semi-structured interviews following their prior engagement in solving a STEM education scenario utilizing two different drone models, namely DJI Avata FPV and Ryze Tello. A thematic analysis of the data indicated that the teachers believe that the use of drones in STEM education has certain benefits (e.g., data collection, active engagement of students) and affordances (i.e., presence, bird’s – eye view) for students. Among the factors facilitating the use of drones are the realism of the STEM scenario, the provision of drones by the school, training, and technical support. The few challenges that were reported involved weather conditions when flying the drones and a small, yet occasional feeling of dizziness primarily associated with the DJI Avata FPV drone.
