Since 2016, the manufacturing of black pottery Bisalhães (Mondrões, Vila Real, Portugal) has been considered an element of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Therefore, we use ethnomathematics to motivate students towards mathematics and to teach them more about this aspect of the cultural identity of Trás-os-Montes. The pottery was included in ethnomathematics, and the work was carried out with a group of seven 6th-grade of the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education (ages 12) students. So, the idea was to value the students’ cultural identity and show them how, from an ancient profession - that of the Bisalhães pottery, it is also possible to look at mathematics. In the implementation part of the task, a trip to Bisalhães was planned so that the students could interview the potter and get to know his work and his workshop. The students were then asked to complete a “Let’s wrap the Bisalhães black pottery” task. In this task, the students would build a box, decorate it using the motifs drawn on the Bisalhães pottery, compute the box’s perimeters, areas, and volumes, and how many boxes could be stored in a bookcase. Our approach is qualitative and descriptive. Students did not show practice collecting measurements, and calculation mistakes were made in the perimeter, area, and volume measurements; they made calculation mistakes and didn’t notice that some of the results were unrealistic. One of the students’ opinions was: “We got to know a little more about the traditions of our land using mathematics.”
